Game Fish
Any animal or fish which is hunted or caught for sport or for food is referred to as Game. Game fish are found in both fresh water and at sea and although some game fish are eaten after they have been caught the majority of game fish anglers prefer to catch and release as this improves fish populations. Game fishing has become an extremely popular sport with lots of discussions as to which is the best fishing bait to use or the best technique.
The fish referred to as game fish will vary depending on where you are in the world. Here in the UK when talking about game fish you will be referring to the group of fish called Salmonids. This group contains trout and salmon. Any other freshwater fish are caught under the name Coarse Fishing.
You might also come across the term Big Game Fish, these are generally bony fish found in the open sea, for example swordfish or tuna.
